About Health Roots
Health Roots aims to provide you with a map to better health through natural approaches. This includes thinking about the foods and drinks you consume, how you buy, prepare and store food, as well as the chemicals you put on your body or have in your home. We also explore lifestyle choices such as exercise, relaxation, sleep, work-life balance and how these impact on your wellbeing.
Health Roots can work with you to provide the most accurate and effective support and advice. We strive to provide a friendly and approachable connection to ensure your health needs are met.
Health Roots is founded by Rhona who has had a 30 year career in healthcare, research and education. Most of this was in nursing, midwifery and maternal & child health.
Rhona has a Bachelor degree in nursing from Glasgow University (1986), a diploma in midwifery (1988), and a PhD in maternal & child health (1998). She completed a diploma in aromatherapy and Swedish massage in 2005 and is currently a student of naturopathic nutrition at CNM College (2023-2025).
Rhona believes in the body’s ability to heal itself and the importance of being in control of your own health choices and decisions.
General information
Naturopathy is a holistic approach to wellbeing that aims to treat the root cause of illness by supporting your body's innate ability to heal itself, rather than merely managing or supressing symptoms. Naturopathic practitioners work with you to maintain your health by improving your understanding of your body and what affects it.
Naturopathic nutrition has a ‘food first’ approach. This means we look at your diet and may suggest changes to strengthen your health. This might be adding in certain foods or drinks or removing others. Where necessary we might also recommend supplements of vitamins, minerals or herbs or other naturopathic remedies such as cell salts. As our wellbeing is affected by how we live, we also include lifestyle recommendations, e.g. sleep hygiene or exercise.
We do not diagnose or treat illness directly and advise you to continue to attend any on-going specialist medical care service and seek medical advice as required.
What is included in a naturopathic consultation?
Includes an initial consultation; an individualised naturopathic plan and 2-3 leaflets or recipes, which are emailed within 2 weeks. After 6-8 weeks you will be invited to a follow-up consultation and an amended plan provided as required. After material is emailed, you will have the option of a short phone call to check understanding and ask questions. There are various options within a consultation, please see our services below.
What happens when I make an appointment?
You will be sent links to two forms to be completed and submitted before your consultation:
The Initial Appointment: Client History asks about your family and personal medical history, your health during your childhood and any medical treatments you may have had in the past and currently.
The 3-day food and drink diary should be completed for 3 days (preferably 2 weekdays and one weekend day).
Your initial consultation
Your initial consultation will last approximately 1 hour and will either be in person or online e.g. via zoom depending on what service you choose. During this we will review your family and medical history and may ask specific questions to help gain a better understanding of your health timeline. We will also discuss your health goals or concerns. We will then go through all the different body systems such as your gut or your nervous system asking specific questions that help to create an overall picture of your health. Some questions may seem irrelevant or unusual but are important as many body functions are connected. We will review your food diary, where we may ask for more detail around food choices, likes and dislikes and how you prepare and eat your meals. We will also explore lifestyle factors, such as exercise, and will examine your fingers and tongue (if in person) as these provide important clues about your health.
After your consultation
After your consultation we will analyse the information you have provided and use this to develop a naturopathic plan giving suggestions about food, drink and any lifestyle factors that may be affecting your health. We may also recommend some supplements if this seems necessary. Your plan will be emailed within 2-weeks of your consultation and you may wish to request a check-in phone call a few days later to check your understanding of the plan and answer any questions you may have. The plan should be in place for around 6-8 weeks.
Your follow-up
Around 6-8 weeks after your initial consultation you will be invited to a 20-minute follow-up phone or zoom call. This is an opportunity to explore how you got on with your plan and any effects from it. We can discuss options for changes that might be acceptable. Following this consultation an updated naturopathic plan will be sent to you within 2-weeks, with a phone call to check understanding similar to your initial consultation.
